I made this frame to help Jerrianne cut quilts square after quilting and before binding. (If you have an easier way, please let us know what it is.) This is a first try. I made in September 2003, about a year ago. She's used it several times and is pleased with it. One change that needs to be made is to lengthen the horizontal adjusting slots to accept smaller quilts. -- jim |

The frame is adjusted in two stages.
1) First the strips are adjusted so the vertical sides are equal and the horizontal sides are equal. Then, the wing nuts tightened snugly, but not cinched down. This will allow movement for the next step while preventing sliding in the slots. 2) Then measure the diagonals and shift the frame until the diagonals are equal. This adjustment takes a little practice. We measure from screw to screw. [NOTE: We consider a difference of one-eighth inch to be equal.]

If you position a very rectangular piece of foamcore (see photo below) in two diagonal corners and adjust the frame after Step 1 above, you may not need to do the trickier adjustment in Step 2. But, in any case you must make sure the diagonal distances are equal.

Once the diagonals are equal, cinch down the thumb screws and if you are reasonably careful it should stay square.
